Agriculture

Kapuskasing has a long history of agriculture which continues to have an important presence. The availability and competitive agricultural land prices coupled with the abundance of favorable soils in the Great Clay Belt make Kapuskasing an ideal location for farming. 

The majority of the soils in Kapuskasing are classified as type 2-4. A large farmland base could be brought back into production.

The 2013 farm cash receipts for the Cochrane district totaled $7.4 million, with $2.0 million in dairy production and $1.4 million in cattle and calves.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation will fund 50% of land clearing and/or tile drainage contractor costs to a maximum of $500.00 per acre.

Demonstration Farm

The Kapuskasing EDC purchased the former federal research centre in 2015. The community sees the farm as a regional economic development tool for the agricultural sector.

More than 850 acres are being farmed for beef, sheep and pork production. The Demonstration Farm also has a 5,000 square foot business incubator equipped with a board room, offices, a laboratory and equipment. Land is also available for crop trials and research.
